GMES
Satellite Earth observation data, combined with measurements from ground networks, yield much useful information for managing the environment and protecting people and property. Reviews conducted by the European Commission and space agencies have spawned a strong desire to mobilize resources and key players to develop and deliver services deemed top priority for environmental management and security.
GMES is a joint initiative of the European Space Agency and the European Union that aims to federate and rationalize Earth observation activities in Europe. This initiative seeks to provide a range of thematic services, the first of which should be operational as of 2008. These services will leverage existing and future infrastructures, while developing new data collection and distribution assets and integrating the data into environmental monitoring and prediction systems. GMES also plans to ensure long-term continuity and upgrading of space assets necessary to acquire these data.
GMES will develop innovative tools and services combining space-based, terrestrial and airborne technologies. Thematic priorities include management of oceans and coastal areas, monitoring of land cover and vegetation, disaster management, water resource management and monitoring of the atmosphere and safety of people and property.
